As a breast cancer survivor, I understand the importance of making informed decisions around the things I can control such as lifestyle choices. From what we consume to what we apply on our skin can all have an impact on our overall health so eliminating known toxins continues to be my focus.
I try to avoid exposure to the following 2 ingredients
The most common preservative used in health, beauty and personal care products include
methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, ethylparaben.
Parabens are added to stop the growth of fungus, bacteria and other potentially damaging microbes.
What worries public health advocates is that while individual products may contain limited amounts of parabens within safe limits, cumulative exposure to the chemicals from several different products could be overloading our bodies and contributing to a wide range of health problems.
In particular, parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.
Many natural and organic cosmetics manufacturers have found effective alternatives to parabens to prevent microbial growth in personal care products which is why we choose to use the alternatives.
As a breast cancer survivor, parabens are an absolute NO for me.
Phthalates / Synthetic Fragrances
Phthalates are a group of chemicals primarily used to soften and improve the flexibility and durability of plastics. Some phthalates are also used as solvents and stabilizers in product formulations. Phthalates are also used in fragrances that are found in perfumes, moisturisers, shampoos and other personal care products.
The issue, I have with Phthalates are that they are endocrine disruptors and may disrupt several hormonal systems in the human body, including the estrogen and androgen systems.
Evidence links several specific phthalates to breast cancer and other negative health effects. Unfortunately, Phthalates can be hard to avoid as they are everywhere in our environment so here are a few things I try to avoid:
- Synthetic fragrance including perfume, room deodoriser and artificially scented candles
- Avoid storing food in plastic containers. I opt for glass and metal
- Avoid plastic drink bottles. I opt for glass
- Look for toxic free nail polish
- Avoid hair spray
Alkira Skin Care products DO NOT contain parabens or phthalates
